Helping Thirsty People

Helping Thirsty People

There are many ways to give alms and assistance. You can help orphans, help people who are starving, help people who are bankrupt, help victims of natural disasters. Everything is good and has virtues. And one of the good alms is to provide assistance in the form of drinking water to people who need it.

In a hadith from Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah (may Allah blesses him), he says :

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ عَنْهَا قَالَ النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نَعَمْ قُلْتُ فَأَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ سَقْيُ الْمَاءِ

“O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Shall I give charity on her behalf?”. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Yes”. I said, “Which charity is best?”. The Prophet said, “A drink of water”. [an-Nasa’i, classed as Hasan by al-Albani].

Helping people with water, can be in many forms. Some of them:

  • Provide free drinking water, especially for thirsty people
  • Making drinking water wells for the community
  • Make irrigation for agriculture and plantations
  • Make clean water reservoirs for dry areas

These are all good deeds of great reward.
