Painting living beings, either by direct hand or with the help of tools. There are many hadiths that prove this action is haram. And, also a big sin. The painter is threatened with heavy torment in the Hereafter.
A hadith from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah blesses them both), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says,
“Those who draw pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection; and it will be said to them: ‘Breathe soul into what you have created” [al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Also from Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (may Allah blesses him), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says,
“The people who has the most torment on the Day of Resurrection, with Allah, are all painters” [al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Al Hafidh Ibnu Hajar says:
“In these hadiths there is a prove to forbid painting (living beings)” [Fathul Baari, 1/525].
But you can pain all things that are not living beings. Like trees, mountains, rivers, buildings, books, furnitures, etc.
In a hadith from Abu Huraira (may Allah blesses him), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says,
“Allah The Almighty says: ‘who is more unjust than those who create like My creation?’. Then, draw grains, or plant seeds, or wheats” [al-Bukhari and Muslim].
