Helping Ourselves by Assisting Others

Avoid wasteful expenditure

Some people choose to give up on their lives. Then, they live lavishly with money, fame, beauty, but still empty inside.

Islam is the religion of rahmah that teaches love and compassion toward others. It admonishes to give a part of one’s wealth to the needy. And, this act is psychologically proven to instill happiness inside the empty heart.

Allah ﷻ says (interpretation of the meaning): “Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And, whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” [Ali ‘Imran, 3:92].

The rights of others

Upon delivering a Friday Sermon, Dr. Munawar Haque elaborated that out of the fadl of Allah ﷻ‌ ‌that one has, one’s legitimate right is one’s own basic needs. One may enjoy according to one’s social status the basic needs of shelter, food, clothing, transportation, etc. You should avoid all this wasteful expenditure. Allah does not like the extravagant.

“Do not waste anything. He does not love the wasteful.” (al-An’am, 6:141)

Others may have a legitimate right over one’s wealth and property.

وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ(24) لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ(25)

“Those in whose wealth there is a known share for the beggars and the deprived.” (al-Ma’arij, 70:24-25)

end quote.

Help others!

Asma’ bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says to me, “Do not hoard! Otherwise, Allah will withhold from you.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Happiness lies in giving away what Allah has given to us. Beyond that, it is a signal of our faith’s sincerity as mentioned here:

“Sadaqah comes from the word shidq (sincerity), i.e. it is a sign of sincerity of faith on the part of the person who gives it.” [Fath al-Qadeer, 2/399]
