We are going to tell you all things about gifts in Islam. There are some adabs (ethics) in Islam you have to be noticed around gifts.

1. Do not take back the gift that already given

The Prophet ﷺ says,

العائد في هِبَتِهِ، كالعائد في قَيْئِهِ

“One who takes back his gift (which he has already given) is like a dog that swallows its vomit” [Sahih al-Bukhari].

2. Always accepting gift

Aisha says,

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْبَلُ الْهَدِيَّةَ وَيُثِيبُ عَلَيْهَا‏

“Allah’s Messenger ﷺ used to accept gifts and used to give something in return” [Sahih al-Bukhari].

3. Give something to the giver in return

As stated in the hadith above.

4. Gift of perfume should not be rejected

A hadith from ‘Azra bin Thabit Al-Ansari:

دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَنَاوَلَنِي طِيبًا، قَالَ كَانَ أَنَسٌ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ لاَ يَرُدُّ الطِّيبَ‏.‏ قَالَ وَزَعَمَ أَنَسٌ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ لاَ يَرُدُّ الطِّيبَ‏

“When I went to Thumama bin ‘Abdullah, he gave me some perfume and said that Anas would not reject the gifts of perfume. Anas said: The Prophet ﷺ used not to reject the gifts of perfume” [Sahih al-Bukhari].

5. Giving gifts will foster love

The Prophet ﷺ says,

تَهَادُوْا تَحَابُّوا

“Give gifts to one another and you will love one another” [Bukhari].
