The term “sunnah” here, means all the guidance from the Prophet (ﷺ) including his saying, his deed, and his approval. In the matter of aqeeda (creed), ibadah (worshipping), akhlaq (morality) and also muamalah (social interaction).
We must follow the sunnah. Means, we must follow the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) in all the above matters.
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often” [al Ahzab : 21].
In a hadith from al Irbad ibn Sariya (may Allah blesses him), that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,
“You have to follow my Sunnah (way) and the way of my rightly-guided successors (al-khulafa’ ar-rashidoon); bite onto it with your eyeteeth (i.e., cling firmly to it).” [at-Tirmidhi, al-Albani in Saheeh Sunan al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is saheeh].
Following the sunnah of is how to practice Islam in the right path.
