All the calamities that befall us, all caused by our sins. But Allah always gives us His mercy, so we are not punished for every sins we made. Allah says in Al Quran:
“Whatever affliction befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned, and yet He overlooks many (of the wrongs you do)” (Ash-Shūrā 42:30).
But, the biggest calamity is, when you still doing sins in the time of calamity. You are doing sin in the time of pandemic, in the time of heavy storm, in the time of starvation. That is the truly calamity.
Al-Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah blesses him) said during a sermon he was delivering in Homs:
“Total destruction lies in doing bad deeds during a time of calamity and tribulation” [Al-‘Uqubat written by Ibn Abi Al-Dunya, article 327].
Do not become complacent to justify all means when you are experiencing distress. Be patient, because Allah is with those who are patient.
